How Can Meditation Help Addiction

Posted March 2, 2015
Meditation can help a person that is addicted to alcohol, drugs and tobacco. Addiction has been a killer. Tobacco alone kills six million people a year. About 30 percent of Americans or roughly about 60 million claim to be addicted to something. The addiction ranges from narcotics to video games even social media. There are addictions that may seem to be harmless at first glance but when it starts interfering with your life then it could be already harmful.

Meditation breaks cravings

One of the best reasons why people chose to meditate for their addiction is to break the cravings. Meditation prevents the mind to wander and ultimately think about the addiction. Even if the situation is not suited to meditate, you can always repeat the chant silently in your head. This will bring about renewed focus and to help you get back on track.     This will help you ease out the negative feelings and thoughts that carry you to the brink of giving in to the cravings. Remember that cravings last for a few minutes. It will not last long. If you are able to stave off the lusts of your addiction you can definitely have control over it after a while.

Meditation gives you focus

The reason why people meditate is to get some focus over situations. Addictions are the garbage that litters your mind. If you are able to get rid of it then you will have better control and focus on what is important in your life. The garbage will ultimately be a detriment to your mental wellbeing. It can push you towards mental disorders and even set off depression. Meditation brings back the equilibrium in the mind by regaining calmness and to bring forth calmness that you deserve to overcome the symptoms of addiction.

Meditation helps you concentrate

Withdrawal symptoms can bite your behind. It is easy to cave in to your cravings without really giving it much thought. Concentration is the thing that addicts lack. This will help the find the inner peace and calmness that can counter the effects of irritability, anxiety and even some physical symptoms such as headaches and nausea. You can take control of your feelings. Addicts are often agitated when they are not getting their fix. This is true with drug addicts and some tobacco addicts. Meditation helps them to go back to the correct path.

Meditation helps strengthen the spirit

Believing that you can achieve is a great way to overcome obstacles that may come in your way. Withdrawing from an addiction is an uphill battle that every addiction must face. It is a test of character and willingness to overcome the addiction. The battle may be lost or won but it is important to have a strong mettle to win the war. The war is not against one’s body but against the garbage that is in the mind. Addiction makes the mind dependent on a chemical that ultimately alters the way we live.

Meditation brings in peace and harmony

Meditation lets you accept the things that you can control and find ways to overcome things that you cannot change. This is a very good path towards achieving inner peace and harmony. Meditation is seen as a great way towards healing. Healing must be holistic and should not only involve the physical self. Healing of the mind and soul is equally important in the war against addiction. Getting physical alone is not enough it should include every facet of life including the spiritual side.

Meditation is the key towards freedom from addiction. It is free and you need not to have fancy gadgets to make it work. It comes from nature and it is one of the most natural ways to seek peace and healing. Meditation replaces your cravings from worldly things towards total deliverance from your addiction.
