Cardio Exercises For Smokers

Everyone needs to get some exercise. Even smokers need to exercise. It is just smokers that do exercise do not get as much benefit because of their addiction to nicotine and adherence to smoking. Smoking causes the lungs to become less effective and as such it can make smokers a bit winded when they become active. This is often the reason why smokers give up on an exercise regimen and hasten the harm and damage to the body. Here are some tips that you can use if you smoke and in dire need of some exercise.

Walking

Walking is the most natural thing that people do. We all walk as long as our lower body is not impaired. We walk to move from one place or another. Walking for about 45 minutes is enough for a great workout and can already provide a great impact to the body. And that’s not all. Just incorporate walking in your daily routine and you will not feel exercising at all. Try to walk from the parking lot to your cubicle instead of taking the elevator. That is already a good way to get some exercise. If you can, try to park a bit further and walk the rest of the way where you’re supposed to go. This way you can get some exercise and will not cause you to be all huffing and puffing.

Swimming

The good thing about swimming is that it offers a full-body workout. It is one of the exercises that allow you to utilize almost all muscles in the body. Swimming is a great way to increase your lung capacity that is already severely impacted by your smoking. Also, swimming allows the body to excrete toxins. Don’t wait until the summer time comes to have a swim. There are swimming pools that are heated and open to the public. Search for the nearest ones so you can get some workout in the pool.

Hiking

Hiking is a great way to enjoy two things at once. A great hiking trail will make you appreciate how beautiful the world is. At the same time, hiking is a great way to increase your lung capacity and perhaps insulate the heart from further damage due to smoking. The nice and cleaner air of the countryside would do well for you. Ask friends to hike along with you. It is a great bonding moment outside the office. Your team can use the opportunity to build character and teamwork that you can bring back to the workplace and improve the cumulative performance of the team.

Biking

Ditch the car, if it is feasible and ride on a bike to work. More and more cities have been designating bike lanes so that people will ride a bicycle to work and reduce the carbon footprint. Not only biking is good for the environment it is also good for you. Make sure that you pace yourself if you happen to get winded easily. You can’t build Rome in a day. Slowly increase your pace when you are able so that you will not get frustrated and abandon your hopes for better functioning lungs.

We cannot overemphasize this but, quit smoking as soon as you can. There is no other way to improve health and to extend your life than to quit smoking. If you easily get winded, it means that your lung capacity has been compromised and you need to take drastic action and avert potential lung disease or problems. Your health is in your hands and take action while you can and not when it is already too late.
